JL Epilogue 3: Where Did the Mechs Go?

Description

The invisible jet, as it had been known, landed in the New Mexico desert. It was a remote area that had one paved access road to it that was about ten miles long. There were a few warehouses and a couple office buildings on the grounds all surrounded by chain link fencing adorned with razor wire. A medium sized parking lot was less than half full in the night time hours. This was a storage facility for a lot of merchandise that was brokered through the online retail giant sahara.com.

Ripper, Angel, Stealth and five of Cyber's soldiers were on board. They had to assume the rest were dead or captured. Including Reaper and of course Dr. Cyber. There certainly was no longer any Scorn. During the confusion after the sonic blast and the slaying of Antiope and capture of Scorn, Ripper and Angel had managed to escape through the passage with Stealth's inert form. They used the secret passage entrance/exit out of the dragon's chamber and moved at top speed to the alien craft.

Two of Cyber's soldiers had piloted the ship back and followed Arch Angel's instructions of where to go. Dr. Cyber did in fact have a contingency plan even if she got caught. Some had to escape, so they could eventually help her escape.

The ship came in quietly and unseen. One of the warehouse buildings was locked up with signs around it saying under construction and none of the local workers were allowed access. The ship hovered over it and the roof opened revealing a hangar. The ship lowered inside and the roof closed again.

Arch Angel was the least damaged, even though he'd been partially been caught by the Canary's cry. But both his maneuvering wings were damaged again, so he had removed them. Stealth was severely damaged and in sleep mode and Ripper, also without wings, was now standing when Arch Angel came to the cargo area of the ship to let them know they had arrived. Ripper had been at the front of Canary's cry and lost his other wing and some body armor, including his blade tipped tail. When the bay door of the ship lowered, the women off loaded some supplies and Ripper and Angel carried Stealth off.

Once inside the hangar they went to a set of freight elevators, one very big elevator, large enough for a something the size of a tank, then another pair next to it. And again beside the freight elevators was a regular civilian elevator. The women went to one of the pair and the two mechs carrying Stealth went to the other. The only direction from here was down. Once inside and the car had started its descent, Ripper spoke up.

“This has been a disaster.”

“We can still salvage things.” Arch Angel replied. “We will have the army.”

“With no way to control it and no one to lead it. And as yet, I have not seen one soldier, let alone an army.” Ripper's tone was filled with disgust. Despite the synthesized voice, his expression came through loud and clear.

“We will figure out how to rescue the Doctor and the plan will move forward.” Angel encouraged.

“This Batman character almost destroyed Stealth and the Manhunter isn't being affected much by your fire anymore. And soon the others will be back too. The Kryptonian, Lantern, Flash and that female alien with the wings. What chance do we have.”

“Despite the setbacks, the doctor has always had back up plans and our best interest at heart.” Angel said.

“Really? Has she?” Ripper retorted.

“What does that mean?” Angel menaced.

“Nothing.”

“If you have something to say, say it.” Angel pressed.

After a pause Ripper said, “I'll tell you this. I've made a couple discoveries, quite by accident, when I ended up logged into Cyber's main frame shortly before we left the Wayne tech lab for good and after she had taken over that Amazon Princess. As long as you are here and in charge, you should see if you can find this file.” And Ripper offered up a file name that was seemingly a series of random numbers and letters. “If you can find this then that is all you need to know.”

“And if it's been deleted?”

“What is it they say? Ignorance is bliss? If you don't find the file, it wont matter. In fact it probably wont matter even if you do find it.” Was Ripper's answer.

“I'm in charge and if I need to know something, you're going to tell me.” Angel tried to loom over Ripper, but the demonic looking mech was not intimidated.

“Or what Angel?” And there was a pause as Angel finally backed down and Ripper continued. “Let's just get to the repairs. Unless you get Cyber back there are not going to be anymore upgrades, so we need to repair ourselves as best as possible. And what is this place anyway? Have you been here before?”

“Yes. There are several facilities around the world like it. And if you want full repairs, this is the place to be.”

“And what of this army? Who or what is it?” Ripper asked as the elevator finally came to a stop.

Angel let out a grunt that serviced as a laugh. “See for yourself.” And the elevator doors opened.

Ripper looked out to a large warehouse floor. But there were no shelves of consumer electronics, clothes, books or appliances. It was a huge room, dimly lit with the floor filled with mechs. They looked similar in construction to Arch Angel, but smaller. Row after row of them. Ripper took in the scene and quickly calculated that there were 1,160 mechs in the room. Actually 1,161. One stood in front of all the others, as if it was the commander. They all stood still and silent, none were online and their lights did not glow. But they were ready.

Ripper spoke up. “Is this all of them?”

“There are five more floors below this and there are thirty facilities around the world. What do you think now?” Arch Angel said, turning to look at Ripper.

Ripper was silent for a moment or two and stared at the soldiers before him, then... “Impressive.”
